ÖVP must end coalition with Landbauer and draw conclusions from Mayor Riedl’s rezoning deals
Vienna (OTS) – “The open letter from ÖVP General Secretary Christian Stocker proves the audacity and double standards of the ÖVP. Instead of pointing the finger at others, the ÖVP must urgently address the dramatic turbulence in its own party,” said SPÖ federal manager Sandra Breiteneder on Sunday.
For months, the ÖVP has not drawn any conclusions from ÖVP Mayor Riedl’s rezoning deals, which have brought him a million-dollar profit. The SPÖ wants to end cases like this once and for all by skimming off the profits from rezoning, but the ÖVP is vehemently once morest the proposal. “There is no apparent will in the ÖVP to put an end to practices like Riedl’s and to put a legal stop to enrichment through a rezoning tax. Breiteneder also points to another problem that the federal ÖVP must solve with its Lower Austrian state party: In Austria, Jews are threatened, arson attacks are carried out on cemeteries and walls are daubed with swastikas. “The fact that the ÖVP in Lower Austria remains in a coalition with the FPÖ in view of this anti-Semitic threat is irresponsible. The ÖVP must end the coalition with Landbauer. Anyone who wants to credibly combat anti-Semitism and counter hatred and incitement cannot form a coalition with the FPÖ,” warns Breiteneder.
The SPÖ federal manager reminds that the FPÖ Lower Austria attracted attention due to anti-Semitic activities. She called for Jews to be required to register and spread Nazi songs. When the Lower Austrian state governor Mikl-Leitner ruled out a coalition with the FPÖ before the election, she criticized Landbauer himself for his “careless handling of anti-Semitism”. After the state elections, the ÖVP formed a coalition with the FPÖ in record time. “A breach of the dam that the SPÖ, the Israelite Community and Christian-social representatives of the ÖVP such as Othmar Karas have sharply criticized,” said Breiteneder.
