Weeks of action by the SPÖ Lower Austria for interest rate cap shows first successes

St. Polten (OTS) For more than two weeks, Sven Hergovich, state party chairman of the SPÖ Lower Austria, has been addressing the massive increase in interest rates for loans. His proposal for a 3% interest rate cap – funded by an excess profits tax – is being discussed across the country and is now putting pressure on the banks.

This effort is now bringing its first successes: because the banks would not do anything voluntarily. Due to the strong commitment of the SPÖ, the banks are now moving slowly. They undertake to give more than 100 million euros to borrowers. For Lower Austrians, this means a relief of more than 30 million euros.

Sven Hergovich, state party chairman of the SPÖ NÖ: “It is a good first step that home builders in the state are now benefiting with 30 million euros. After all, that is more than the nonsensical corona fund of the FPÖ and in contrast to the blue rule-breaking bonus, it is a real relief for the hard-working middle class in the country. Our consistent policy is paying off.”

“I will continue to fight for an interest rate cap in the coming months. 30 million can only be the first step, but it takes ten times as much money”, Hergovich recognizes that there is still too little movement on the part of the banks. Hergovich sees the federal government as being required to guarantee every Austrian an affordable four walls: “That’s why I will not give up and will continue to fight for a fair distribution of the excess bank profits. I guarantee the banks: that was a first step, yes, but they will have to pay back a lot more to the home builders! In addition, we will take a very close look to ensure that the measures that have now been promised are actually implemented and not just talked regarding.”

The situation is similar when it comes to the SPÖ’s demand for “ATMs in every community”. Finally, Hergovich sees movement among the banks in this regard: “But the goal is an ATM in every community. As in other countries, the banks should make this cash supply available.”
