(Agence Ecofin) – Launched regarding 20 years ago, the aeronautical industry in Morocco is experiencing remarkable growth. The technological assets offered by the Cherifian kingdom and the availability of affordable labor are among the factors that attract the world’s largest aeronautical manufacturers.
Spirit AeroSystems, an American company specializing in the manufacture of aerostructures for civil and military aviation, has started producing the fuselage (particularly the front and rear sections) of the Airbus A220 at its Midparc site, in Casablanca.
Active in Morocco for several years, the company, which locally produced several business jet components for the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier, recently extended its site by 25,000 m² in order to add Airbus elements.
The model developed for this production line provides that the fuselage components will then be shipped from Morocco to be assembled at Spirit’s site in Belfast, Northern Ireland, according to a company statement.
« The Kingdom already manufactures parts for all of Airbus’ commercial aircraft, including the A220. This device is the latest addition to our product range and therefore to our industrial footprint in Morocco. With this achievement, the manufacturing of A220 parts is now well integrated into the Moroccan aeronautical ecosystem and can proudly be described as ”Made in Morroco”. said Mikail Houari, President, Airbus Africa and Middle East.
The extension of Spirit AeroSystems’ manufacturing portfolio is taking place in a context of gradual resumption of activities in the aeronautics industry affected by the Covid-19 crisis, which had caused the suspension of numerous production programs and the dismissal of many workers. Other similar investments might propel the recovery of this industry.
