spiral: Requests “Alki Stea Road”, 25 years since his death

The naming of a street (or square) of Patras in memory of Alkis Stea, an emblematic figure of the Patron Carnival, is requested by the spiral faction, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his death. The proposal was submitted to the Board of Directors of the Municipal Enterprise “Patrino Carnival” by Akia Stamati, member of the Board and member of the Political Secretariat of the spiral.

“We consider the completion of a quarter of a century since his death as the ideal opportunity for the city of Patras to move forward in the expression of this honor” is typically stated in the relevant proposal. The following is the full rationale, as submitted to the Board of Directors of KEDIP Patrino Karnavali, at the meeting of February 27, 2024:

“This year marks 25 years since the death of the late Alkis Stea, who was the “voice” of Patrinos Carnival and its Hidden Treasure, for a number of years (from 1967 to 1999 continuously). Alkis Steas was a personality who identified more than anyone with the Patrinos Carnival and through it with our city, even though he was not a Patrinos, and the legacy he left to the institution is huge, by general admission.

Patras honored him twice, once in his lifetime in 1996 when he declared him an “honorary citizen, for his overall contribution to the Patrinos Carnival” and once in 2009 when he approved the proposal for the establishment of “Alki Stea Day” on March 9 ( day that coincides with his graduation), a celebration that was also accepted by the Ministry of Culture and has been celebrated ever since, mainly in our city.

March 9, 2024 coincides with the penultimate Saturday of this year’s Halloween, a day with special significance for both our Carnival and the 59th Hidden Treasure that will culminate in the city that weekend. It is noted, moreover, that March 9 is not usually part of the carnival season, as is hopefully the case this year.

We therefore consider the completion of a quarter of a century since his death as the ideal opportunity for the city of Patras to proceed to the third and greatest expression of honor, by naming a square in his memory. The proposed square is located at the end of Kilkis Street, at a symbolic point for the Patrinos Carnival, exactly where crews and floats end up following Sunday’s Great Parade.

Today we are submitting this specific proposal to the Board of Directors in order for the Public Benefit Enterprise of the Municipality of Patra “Patrino Carnival” to ensure that it is implemented. This is something extremely simple, as all that is needed is to implement a decision already made – a decade ago – by the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Patreon.

I am attaching a document that proves that the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Patreon has UNANIMOUSLY decided “to rename the circular square located at the intersection of Kilkis and Konstantinoupoleos streets and is a part of North Epirus Square to ALKI STEA SQUARE”, following a relevant recommendation of the “Advisory Committee” Naming” (item 12 of the Agenda of the 2nd Meeting of the Municipal Council, January 29, 2014).

Please, therefore, that we immediately take the relevant decision as a Board of Directors so that the President takes the necessary actions until March 9, 2024 and the sign “ALKI STEA SQUARE” is posted in this specific part of the city.

Thank you in advance for approving the proposal and I remain at your disposal for any further clarification on the matter.”
