Where Have They Been?
what have the members of Spinal Tap been up to since their heyday? Here’s a glimpse:
- Nigel Tufnel: Reiner reveals, “Nigel has been running a cheese and guitar shop in Berwick-upon-Tweed.He’s also been performing with a local folk band in the village that play penny whistle and mandolin, and he plays electric guitar with them. We show a little clip of that.”
- David St. Hubbins: “David St Hubbins has been living in Morro Bay in California, and he’s been writing music for podcasts, particularly this one true-crime podcast called The Trouble With Murder. He also writes the music that you hear when you’re on hold on the phone.”
- Derek Smalls: “And then we have Derek.Derek is living in London and is now the curator of the New Museum of Glue. He’s curated glue from every country in the world, the whole history of glue, and he shows me around. He’s also been performing with a philharmonic orchestra, and he’s written this kind of symphony about the fact that the devil wears a bad hair piece. It’s called Hell Toupée.”

What was your favourite moment from your time playing in a folk band?
Archyde Exclusive: Nigel Tufnel Talks “Spinal Tap II: The End continues”
The legendary Spinal Tap is back! With “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” hitting US cinemas on September 12, 2025, Archyde had the exclusive opportunity to sit down with none other than Nigel Tufnel, the band’s iconic guitarist, to discuss the film, his cheese and guitar shop, and what fans can expect from this highly anticipated sequel. We spoke with him by phone from his humble abode in Berwick-upon-Tweed, England.
A Conversation with Nigel Tufnel
Archyde’s Bethany Rivers: Nigel, thank you for taking the time to speak with Archyde. The world is thrilled about “Spinal Tap II.” what inspired the band to reunite after all these years?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, Bethany, things have been a bit quiet, haven’t they? Derek’s been gluing things, David’s been podcasting, and I’ve been…well, let’s just say I’ve been exploring the nuanced relationship between fromage and fretboards. but Marty DiBergi, bless his persistent little heart, he just kept calling, kept reminding us of the unfinished symphony of Spinal Tap. And honestly? The world needed us again. It’s our destiny to rock… moderately.
Cheese, Guitars, and Folk Music
Bethany Rivers: We understand you’ve been running a cheese and guitar shop in Berwick-upon-tweed. How did that come about?
Nigel Tufnel: Ah, yes, Nigel’s Noble Nibbles & Noteworthy Necks. It’s a passion project, really. I believe ther’s a deep connection between the pungent aromas of aged cheddar and the soaring riffs of a well-crafted guitar. It’s all about texture, Bethany. And yes, I’ve been dabbling with a local folk band, playing penny whistle and mandolin…with my electric guitar, of course. Can’t leave the electrics behind!
“Rockin’ in the Urn” and New Music
Bethany rivers: The film promises new music, including Derek Smalls’ “meditation upon death,” Rockin’ In The Urn. What can you tell us about the new Spinal Tap sound?
Nigel Tufnel: Rockin’ in the Urn is… well, it’s derek. Profound, yet slightly disturbing. As for the rest, we’re pushing boundaries, Bethany. We’re exploring new sonic landscapes. Think Stonehenge, but…smaller. And slightly less flammable, hopefully.
Cameos and Collaborations
Bethany Rivers: The cameos are unbelievable! Elton John, Paul McCartney, Lars Ulrich… What was it like working with such legends?
Nigel Tufnel: It was, shall we say, eventful. Elton’s a dear, although his glitter cannons nearly set my cheese display on fire. Paul’s a true gentleman, always willing to lend a hand to a struggling guitarist… or, you know, a legendary one. And Lars…well, Lars is Lars. Let’s just say keeping up with his drumming is harder than finding a perfectly aged Roquefort.
A Thought-Provoking Question
Bethany Rivers: many fans were initially skeptical about a sequel. What do you say to those who worry about tarnishing the legacy of the original “This is Spinal Tap?”
Nigel Tufnel: I say, Bethany, that life is a tapestry woven with threads of rock and roll, cheese, and the occasional exploding amplifier. We’re not here to tarnish. We are here to illustrate that the tapestry is still being woven. If we can make one person laugh, one person shed a tear of joyous rock-induced euphoria, than we’ve succeeded. Plus, the money’s pretty good.
A Final Note
Bethany Rivers: what do you hope audiences take away from “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues?”
Nigel Tufnel: I hope they remember that Spinal Tap is more than just a band. We’re a state of mind. A way of life.A reminder that even in the face of exploding drum kits and questionable album covers, there’s always room for a good laugh. And perhaps, a slice of mature cheddar.
