After complaints: Parking spaces transferred – Spiez tightens rules for campers

Ban on several parking spaces and parking fees around the clock: The municipality of Spiez is preparing for the upcoming rush of campers with new measures.

  • Parking spaces that have been taken over by campers have repeatedly caused discontent in Spiez in recent years.

  • With a view to the upcoming season, the community has now decided on new rules.

  • You are now only allowed to spend the night in campers in four parking spaces. Parking fees also apply around the clock.

Spiez is more popular with tourists than it has been for decades: in 2023, the community on Lake Thun recorded 169,000 overnight stays – an increase of eight percent compared to the previous year. This came suspiciously close to the historic all-time record from 1971, when 174,352 guests stayed overnight in the resort.

Especially in summer, Spiez is not only overrun by hotel guests, but also by day visitors and campers. This has had undesirable consequences in recent years: the parking spaces were repeatedly blocked by mobile homes, buses and campers – which led to complaints: Because the vehicles were too big for the parking spaces, it was sometimes difficult to drive through, explains local councilor Pia Hutzli the “SRF Regional Journal”. There were cramped road conditions at the castle, among other places.

Parking fees 24/7

That’s why Spiez is now tightening the screws with a view to the coming summer. Campers are now only welcome in four of the municipality’s parking spaces; they are prohibited in the remaining nine. Unlike before, when parking was free between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., fees now apply around the clock. Parking now costs between 1.50 and two francs per hour. You can stay for a maximum of twelve hours.

On the one hand, the community benefits from the campers by shopping in local shops or visiting sights, Hutzli admits. In return, they would also incur costs, for example due to the checks to be carried out or the disposal of the waste.
