British police began a search for a man who was disguised as “Spider-Man” and carried out an attack targeting a controversial historical landmark in central London, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to the details published by British media, and seen by Al Arabiya.net, a masked man attacked the famous historical statue erected in front of the BBC building in central London, using a hammer and a chisel.

This comes days following repair work began on the previously attacked statue, a controversial statue of a character from Shakespeare’s play, who is said to be a man who sexually assaulted two of his daughters.

The man wearing a “Spider-Man” mask was seen, at dawn on Saturday, ascending the facade of the statue and vandalizing it with a hammer and chisel. He also raised a banner criticizing the company that is carrying out restoration work for the statue.

The statue displayed near the entrance to the BBC building dates back to 1932, but it was attacked last year amid calls for its removal, and the start of its restoration was announced last Tuesday, which is likely that the attacker rejects the ongoing restoration and repair process.

The police were called at around 4:15 am today, Saturday, following the man, “Spider-Man”, was seen climbing on the statue and vandalizing it.

A police spokesman said: “The man reportedly damaged a statue. Officers attended the scene but it was not possible to safely detain the man given the circumstances of the incident, including the statue’s height.”

The BBC said on Tuesday that following “careful consideration” taking into account the building’s historical and cultural significance, and following discussions with leading cultural organisations, the repair work was agreed with all costs covered by the company’s insurance.

More than 3,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the removal of the statue, while repairs and restoration work are scheduled to be completed by the end of June, late next month.
