Sony’s latest Spider-Man animated film will not be screened in the UAE. The decision follows a backlash over support for transgender rights. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was originally scheduled to be screened across the UAE from June 22. But the film has been dropped from the list of upcoming films on the websites of major cinema operators in the Gulf countries.
In response to an inquiry on Facebook, VOX Cinemas said that ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ will not be released in the UAE. The film company, which operates in the UAE and the Gulf region, did not specify the reason for the decision.
Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment, which owns Vox Cinemas, has yet to comment on the decision. A scene from the superhero film released late last month, which featured a flag reading “Protect Trans Kids”, caused much controversy online in the UAE.
The UAE Media Council explained that it will not allow the distribution of content that violates the values and principles of the UAE. The Emirates Media Council monitored and evaluated information regarding the film’s content. Last year, Disney’s animated film ”Lightyear”, which featured a kissing scene between two women, was banned in the Middle East, including the UAE.
In neighboring Saudi Arabia, the film organization declined to comment on whether “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will be shown in theaters. VOX Cinemas has removed the film from its cinema website in Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait.
