Future Marvel Sony projects

Wade: The anticipated Kraven The Hunter is set to be the concluding Sony live-action Spider-Man spin-off film to grace the big screen. Apart from the rumored Agent Spider film, do you have any insider information on whether Sony is actively developing any additional projects?

Alex Perez: Sony is perpetually strategizing to optimize their profits from their Spider-Man character rights, especially considering their intricate ties with Marvel that restrict their ability to fully integrate Spider-Man into their own cinematic narratives. Consequently, they diligently seek to leverage characters that have a close association with Spider-Man, capitalizing on the allure of highly marketable actors who can effectively promote their films. This approach is part of a broader strategy to extend their usage of these rights and generate revenue.

The plan involves a deliberate transactional effort evident in the production of various Sony movies. For instance, consider Madame Web and the now-shelved El Muerto, where the sole motivation behind their creation was to capitalize on the trending popularity of Bad Bunny at that particular moment; however, relentless delays led to those plans evaporating. That said, there are notable exceptions such as their acclaimed animated Spider-Man trilogy, which has garnered admiration for its innovative storytelling. Venom stands as another prime example where the actor displayed genuine passion for the character, striving to craft a compelling narrative surrounding it.

To directly address your question, there are indeed continuous ideas in development, yet a mere fraction of these concepts ever transition into actual projects. Characters like Silver Sable, Black Cat, Sandman, Rhino, Chameleon, and Scorpion have received pitches for films. Currently, Sony’s radar includes a new focus on the Agent Venom for potential cinematic development. I also recall discussions surrounding projects for Spider-adjacent characters like Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman and Spider-Man 2099, but those ambitious plans ultimately ended up shelved. Thus, rest assured that while there are ongoing developments, the likelihood of these projects materializing remains relatively slim.

Spider-Man 4 and beyond

Harsha Adhikary: Hey Alex! How have you been? I was curious if Knull is still slated to be the villain in Spider-Man 4. Regardless of whether he makes the cut, do you anticipate Peter will don the black suit in this installment? Thank you for your insight.

Alex Perez: I do expect the Symbiote to play a pivotal role in the upcoming narrative, especially as we near the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. My theory suggests that an intriguing way to introduce Knull might be through a scenario where Spider-Man meets his demise during the Avengers films, only to resurrect through the influence of the Symbiote, inadvertently creating a new codex for Knull to pursue. Thus, the short answer to your inquiries remains a definitive yes.

Pierre Chanliau: Hey, Alex… It might be premature to speculate on this, but have you sensed any indications from Sony regarding a potential scaling back of Spider-Man’s presence post-Spider-Man 4, mirroring the tone and approach seen in Homecoming, particularly with the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga looming?

Alex Perez: Absolutely. Once the Multiverse Saga reaches its denouement, the vision is to revert to a more fundamental and classic approach. They aim to weave the Devil’s Reign storyline into a future Spider-Man film.

Spider-Man Miles Morales

joshua: Any fresh developments regarding the trajectory for Miles Morales?

Alex Perez: The direction really hinges on which iteration you’re referring to—are we discussing the animated version, the video game adaptation, or a potential live-action portrayal? In the animated realm, we are approaching the conclusion of Miles’ narrative, which is thrilling, especially considering the expansive infinite multiverse concept, yet we’ve predominantly observed variants of Peter Parker so far. Given the multitude of characters and iterations present, it invokes the question—there must be more than one Miles Morales existing out there, right? This notion ties into the conjoined stories involving these characters, but I’ll dive deeper into that later. 😉

Miles’ arc in the Marvel’s Spider-Man video game franchise shows him emerging as the primary protagonist. It wouldn’t astound me if players initially engage with Miles for an extensive period before transitioning to Peter’s character later on.

Regarding the idea of a live-action representation, various proposals have circulated, including plans for a standalone film within the Sony-verse or a potential integration into the MCU, paving the way for him to eventually inherit the Spider-Man mantle from Tom Holland as his tenure comes to a close. While discussions are still in progress, the overarching vision involves having them team up, which is an intriguing prospect.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield

Tehstylishone: Hello Alex! Do you believe Marvel now regards Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as a packaged deal for cameos, suggesting we might consistently see them together in upcoming films?

Alex Perez: I previously touched upon how their future film appearances are intended to be framed as legacy moments—integrating their characters into current narratives while honoring their history and legacy. At present, there isn’t any indication of them being treated as a strict package deal, at least not that I am aware of.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man

FootlongSlinky: Will Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and/or Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine cross paths or potentially team up with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?

Alex Perez: Based on all indications, I expect them to interact—I’m very curious to see how those dynamic exchanges will unfold.

FootlongSlinky: How significant of a role will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man play in Avengers Secret Wars?

Alex Perez: He’s likely to serve as one of the primary leads in the film. The narrative’s unfolding heavily revolves around him. Consider the immense burden resting on Peter’s shoulders—his choices have led to the ultimate losses: his aunt, close friends, his romantic relationship, and a shot at a semblance of normalcy. Now, coupled with the risk of both the universe and Multiverse facing annihilation, all due to his attempts to manipulate the Multiverse to enable others to forget his identity as Spider-Man. This creates a profound emotional weight, underscoring even for a superhero like Spider-Man.

SpiderBryte98: Will Spider-Man make appearances in other MCU films beyond just standalone outings or Avengers lore, such as a potential Deadpool & Wolverine sequel crossover or a cameo in the Fantastic 4, perhaps even in Avengers vs. X-Men? I’ve heard Kevin Feige intends to integrate Spider-Man into a wider array of MCU films, beyond only the standalone or Avengers narratives, advocating for greater creative control and flexibility with Spider-Man’s role in the MCU’s future while negotiating with Sony.

Alex Perez: Specifics around this remain elusive. I am aware of efforts to include him in a brief cameo for Daredevil: Born Again, suggesting that Fisk and his vigilante-hunting Punishers are after individuals like Spider-Man, but whether we’ll see him in that capacity is still uncertain.

Venom and Eddie Brock

freshy: What’s up Alex! In the post-credit scene of Venom: The Last Dance, did the cockroach acquire the Venom symbiote? Is Venom still alive?

Alex Perez: Let’s keep it straightforward—Venom is indeed alive, and that’s all I’m going to say about it.

Laurie Rolfe: Will Tom Hardy’s Venom appear in Secret Wars after the events of Spider-Man 4?

Alex Perez: I can’t say for sure, but I don’t anticipate that happening.
