SpiceJet planes walk on the tarmac at Delhi airport; an investigation by the DGAC is open

After disembarking from SpiceJet’s Hyderabad-Delhi flight on Saturday night, several passengers had to walk on the airport tarmac as the airline was unable to provide a bus for around 45 minutes to take them to the terminal, according to sources. The aviation regulator DGCA has opened an investigation into the incident, sources say.

When asked regarding the incident, SpiceJet said in a statement: “The report that passengers on the SpiceJet Hyderabad-Delhi flight on August 6 were forced to walk to the terminal is false and is denied. There was a brief delay in the arrival of coaches to transport passengers from the tarmac to the terminal building”.

“Despite repeated requests from our staff, a few passengers have started to make their way to the terminal. They had barely walked a few meters when the buses arrived. All passengers, including those who had started walking, traveled in the coaches to the terminal,” the official statement reads.

The Hyderabad-Delhi flight in question had 186 passengers on board when it landed at around 11:24 p.m. yesterday. Reportedly, some passengers were taken immediately to Terminal 3 on a bus, while many others were stranded for over 45 minutes.

For security reasons, passengers are prohibited from walking on the airport tarmac. Therefore, all airlines operating in the country use buses to transport passengers from the plane to the terminal or vice versa using the demarcated path which is reserved for vehicles.
