Walking in nature would have multiple benefits on our body. And you don’t have to do much to enjoy it.

During the long Ascension weekend, many French people go enjoy the great outdoors. Stay in the countryside or by the sea, barbecue with friends or walk in the forest, all options are allowed. Yet thousands of people are unaware that going into nature contributes to their good mental and physical health.

Several studies have already shown that walking in a park, a forest or a mountain has a positive effect on our diet and our mind. Moreover, these effects are also felt by people living in the city. Going regularly to a green space is beneficial for our health. Today, these findings are confirmed through the publication of a new meta-analysis.

Australian researchers have analyzed the results of more than 90 studies on the benefits of contact with nature. And their beneficial effects concern both stress and the risk of disease.

A treatment with many virtues to combat stress

The study highlights that these walks first of all have a beneficial aspect on the production of cortisol. The stress hormone is sometimes overproduced by our brain because of work, imperatives… However, this meta-analysis reveals that spending time outdoors can significantly reduce cortisol levels.

Lowering our level of cortisol is also decisive in the prevention of certain diseases. High levels increase the risk of anxiety, depression, but also hypertension and diabetes. In fact, even taking the time to go outside for 5 minutes can help limit the risk of illness.

In 2019, an American study even determined the recommended daily duration to enjoy the benefits of nature. It would amount to 20 minutes a day and it is even prescribed by some doctors all over the world.

How to encourage the public to go 20 minutes a day in nature?

The study states that the size of the natural space has no negative impact. The only important point is that each person feel good, relax and enjoy the great outdoors. She can therefore simply go to her garden, a park, near a lake… Being a real moment for herself, it is therefore essential to choose a place that is pleasant or that is easy to access.

However for the most homebound, walking can be difficult. However, a simple method can encourage people to walk outside: be accompanied. Whether it’s with children, friends or family, spending time together is a source of motivation. Finally, don’t forget to take your time.

Contemplate plants and flowers or observe birds also contributes to good mental health. So on this long weekend, spend time outside if you have the opportunity!
