Sisters, Songwriters, and Storytellers: Introducing The Ennis Sisters
Hailing from the vibrant city of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Maureen, Karen, and Teresa Ennis are more than just sisters – they are a musical force to be reckoned with. Their captivating harmonies, tinged with the unique flavours of their Atlantic Canadian heritage, have charmed audiences across the globe.
The sisters weave a tapestry of sound using traditional instruments like guitar and tambourine, but their music truly shines through the inclusion of indigenous instruments such as the uplifting flute, haunting tin whistle, and the rhythmic pulse of the bodhrán – a native Celtic drum.
A Legacy of Music and Storytelling
The Ennis Sisters have a rich history marked by musical excellence. Their debut album, “Red is the Rose,” was released in 1997 and immediately recognized as a standout in the folk music scene, earning them the title of “Best Folk Album” by the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. This success paved the way for an impressive career trajectory, releasing 14 albums and accumulating numerous prestigious awards, including a JUNO Award and a SOCAN Award in 2002.
Beyond their musical prowess, The Ennis Sisters are known for their captivating storytelling. Their songwriting is deeply rooted in the traditions and folklore of their beloved Atlantic Canada, transporting listeners to a world of rugged beauty, resilient spirit, and heartwarming tales. And, of course, no Ennis Sisters show is complete without a touch of lively Irish step-dancing!
A Festive Evening Awaits
“Christmas with The Ennis Sisters” promises a delightful blend of original folky tunes and beloved holiday classics. You’ll be swaying to favorites like “I’ll Be There Christmas Eve,” “Christmas Belles,” and “Winter Wonderland,” among others.
Their rendition of “I’ll Be There Christmas Eve” holds a special significance. As the story goes, their father, a huge fan of the original version by Ron Hynes, felt the lyrics weren’t quite appropriate for his young daughters. Ever the resourceful parent, he reached out to Ron Hynes, who kindly agreed to pen a new version specifically for The Ennis Sisters. Now a beloved holiday staple in their repertoire, this heartwarming tale underscores the sisters’ close-knit bond and their commitment to sharing music that resonates with audiences of all ages.
