Courier Price Hikes Loom for Bulgarian Businesses
Bulgarian businesses shipping goods both domestically and internationally should prepare for upcoming price increases from two leading courier companies, Speedy and econt. Starting march 1, 2025, both companies will implement adjustments to their shipping rates, reflecting the rising costs associated with providing courier services in the evolving economic climate.
Speedy: Adjusting to Higher Shipping Demands
Speedy’s revisions will primarily impact palletised shipments, with a 10% increase planned for both domestic and international deliveries. The company states this adjustment is crucial to “meet the increased requirements for transporting high fiscal risk shipments and to continue to fully offer our services in this weight.”
For lighter shipments within Bulgaria (up to 7 kilograms), Speedy is switching to a pricing structure based on actual physical weight rather of volumetric weight. This change, effective March 1st, aims to create a fairer system for both shippers and the company.
Another modification involves a slight increase in their cash on delivery fee. Speedy cites rising costs in the banking sector and increased value for financial services as the reason behind raising the fee from 0.6% to 0.7% excluding VAT, with a minimum of 50 cents without VAT per shipment.
Econt: Broader Price Increases Across Services
Econt, another major player in the Bulgarian market, is implementing a generalized 8% price increase across all its services for various consignment types. This hike will take effect in Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania on March 1st.
Econt attributes the price adjustments to the ongoing economic situation and the consistent rise in the prices of goods and services. Currently, additional cash on delivery and “declared value” services remain unaffected by these price changes.
While these increases may present a challenge to some businesses, it is indeed crucial to remember that they are a reflection of the current economic realities affecting the courier industry.
Speedy and econt Raise Prices: A Conversation with Industry Experts
Recent price increases announced by courier giants Speedy and Econt are sending ripples thru Bulgaria’s e-commerce landscape. To understand the implications of these changes, archyde spoke with Tsvetan Petrov, CEO of EuroFreight Solutions, a leading logistics consultancy in Bulgaria, and Maria Ivanova, Founder and Head Analyst of RetailPulse BG, an e-commerce research firm.
Dealing with Rising Costs
Archyde began by asking about the specific pressures driving these price adjustments. “Fuel costs have been incredibly volatile and have spiked significantly over the past year,” explained Tsvetan Petrov. “Vehicle maintenance and repairs are also costing more due to inflation and supply chain disruptions. There’s also constant pressure to attract and retain skilled labor in a competitive job market.”
Maria Ivanova added, “Consumers may not always realize the complexities involved in delivering packages efficiently and reliably. But the truth is, material prices, insurance premiums, and even packaging supplies are all contributing to the financial strain on courier companies.”
Impacts on Businesses and consumers
With price increases impacting both domestic and international deliveries,Archyde naturally wanted to know how these changes would effect Bulgaria’s thriving e-commerce sector.”It’s a mixed bag,” Maria Ivanova responded. “Some businesses may absorb part of the increased cost to remain competitive, while others may unluckily have to pass the burden onto consumers. This could possibly slow down e-commerce growth, especially for smaller businesses operating on tighter margins.”
Tsvetan Petrov offered a more optimistic perspective, suggesting,”These price adjustments could actually incentivize businesses to explore more cost-effective shipping strategies. We might see a shift towards consolidated shipments or a renewed focus on optimizing packaging to minimize volumetric weight charges.”
Looking Ahead: New challenges and Adaptations
The conversation inevitably turned to the future of the courier industry. Both experts acknowledged the need for ongoing innovation and adaptation.”The industry will need to embrace new technologies and explore sustainable solutions to navigate these evolving challenges,” emphasized Tsvetan Petrov. “Finding ways to optimize routes, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize environmental impact will be crucial for long-term success.” Maria Ivanova added, “consumers, too, will play a role in shaping the future of delivery. We’re likely to see increased demand for clarity, real-time tracking, and personalized delivery options.”

Navigating the New Normal: Pricing shifts and Challenges in the Bulgarian Courier Industry
The Bulgarian courier industry is in a state of flux. Recent pricing changes by major players like Speedy and Econt reflect the complex forces shaping this dynamic sector, prompting businesses and consumers alike to adapt to a new landscape.Speedy, in a noteworthy move, has shifted its pricing structure for lighter shipments to reflect actual weight rather than volumetric weight. “This change is certainly positive as it brings fairer pricing for shipments that are more reliant on actual physical weight,” explains Tsvetan Petrov, a logistics expert. “It encourages more accurate packaging and potentially helps alleviate cases where businesses might have been overcharged for oddly shaped lightweight packages.”
Looking ahead, industry leaders identify several key challenges. Sustainability is paramount. “Consumers are increasingly demanding eco-kind shipping options,” says Maria Ivanova, a courier industry analyst. “Companies need to invest in more sustainable packaging and delivery practices to meet these expectations.”
Another pressing concern is talent acquisition and retention. Tsvetan Petrov emphasizes, “The industry needs skilled technicians, drivers, and logistics specialists to keep supply chains moving efficiently.”
These shifts highlight the need for innovation and adaptability within the courier industry. Businesses must find ways to streamline their shipping processes and minimize the impact of these price increases.
