In a race without a future presented this afternoon at the Long Track Speed Skating World Cup in Quebec, Brunet had to achieve the best time over 500 meters among the Canadians.

Paired with Yankun Zhao, he finished at 8e rank in group B with a time of 35 s 32, compared to 35 s 25 for the skater from Calgary who obtained the second and final pass to the world championships. Prequalified for the world championship, Laurent Dubreuil has the other entry from Canada.

“It’s heartbreaking to miss the World Cup by 0.07 seconds, but it’s motivating for the future,” he summed up. I can’t be disappointed. I achieved my best career time at sea level. We fought until the end and he managed a better last turn to beat me. Since the start of the season, it has been difficult in terms of execution and, today, I had one of my best races of the year.

Propelled to the forefront with a second place at the Canadian selections in October 2021 in Calgary, where he surprised everyone including himself, Brunet has since taken a few steps back.

“I learned to run before I learned to walk,” he illustrated. Speed skating is a very technical sport and I had to learn the basics. Missing the World Cup in the winter of 2023 and this fall brought me back to earth. I asked myself questions. I reached the bottom of the barrel both physically and mentally.”

“At school when you study hard, you get a good result on the exam, but it doesn’t work the same way in sport, to pursue the Gatineau native skater. Life as an athlete is not easy. When you’re going through a low as an athlete, that’s what I find the most difficult. When you’re high, you’re on cloud nine.”

Among the women, Rose Laliberté-Roy found herself in an identical situation. With a time of 39 s 32, she took 3e rank in Group B among the Canadians at the start and must also forget the world championship.
