Speeding up songs is nothing new. Renowned Questlove dubbed the phenomenon Chipmunk Soul back in the ’00s, when artists on Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella label mightn’t help but add an up-tempo soul sample to every song, but upping the tempo has been a staple in dance and techno since long before. Lately, however, TikTok seems to have extended the technique to new genres under the name of sped up/nightcore. With a series of viral sounds, sped-up versions of slow, sad tunes seem to be giving birth to an era of chipmunk indie.
Created by anonymous accounts dedicated to uploading bawdy songs, these new versions are having more success than the originals. For example, the original version of Good Looking by Suki Waterhouse has regarding 70,000 users in the app, but the accelerated version reaches almost 350,000. In this way, the pattern is repeated for a long list of artists, from Demi Lovato to Michael Buble, and it seems that TikTok wants to reinvent old songs. Transforming slow, sad songs into something sweet, the fast-paced song trend on TikTok has found a way to borrow all the catchiness and vibes of icons like Alvin the Chipmunks, while allowing users to maintain their alt-indie aesthetic. .
