The first location on the Budapest trip for the St. Pölten women on Saturday was the Matyasföldi ice rink in Budapest, where the MAC was waiting. The SKN Sabers were still weakened by failures and were only able to travel abroad with twelve players. The Hungarians, who were slightly favored for that reason, also started strongly as expected and took a 1-0 lead shortly before the end of the first third (18:12).

In the second period, the Sabers kept the game much more balanced. “The girls showed incredible fighting spirit,” praises general manager Christian Klepp. Magdalena Luggin in goal was now simply invincible and following 33:57 minutes Lena Artner equalized. And a minute before halftime the Sabers struck once more. Antonia Matzka scored the opening goal, which sent the Hungarians into the dressing room visibly shocked.

At the beginning of the final third there were almost furious attacks from MAC. “But the longer the game lasted, the more nervous they became,” says Klepp. And so the Sabers finally achieved a sensational victory over one of the big title favorites.

Not for the faint of heart: Two goals in the final minute for victory!

On Sunday the Sabers started the game once morest Jegkorong Akademia in the Tüskesator as slight favorites. A few chances were created straight away, but initially without any tangible success. Both goalkeepers seemed to be almost invincible that day, although Magdalena Luggin had an easier task for the St. Pölten women.

The game swung back and forth, with advantages for the St. Pölten women. But only when everyone in the hall was already expecting a 0-0 draw, which is rare in ice hockey, did Hannah Price redeem the Sabers following 59:20 minutes with a shot from the blue line to make it 1-0. The Budapest women took the goalkeeper off the ice and Anna Billa made the final score 2-0 with an empty-net goal from her own third five seconds before the end. Afterwards there was of course great celebration in the team, following the disappointment the previous week had been huge. “With excellent teamwork and fighting spirit, we got six points within 24 hours in Budapest, that’s not bad,” said general manager Klepp.

The home game once morest Aisulu Almaty continues on Sunday (12.15 p.m.) at the Lower Austria Sports Center. The Kazakhs are currently staying in Graz and are preparing for their series of games in Europe.
