You have certainly noticed it if you travel regularly between the Ixelles cemetery and Boulevard Général Jacques: the portion of Avenue de la Couronne which connects these two well-known points in the municipality of Ixelles is undergoing a complete transformation.
The U-Square campus (nearby), which will occupy the former gendarmerie barracks, is in full development. Work on the new site of the INSAS artistic school has also been launched. A Dutch-speaking campus should be created in the former Beobank headquarters. The Etterbeek station should soon undergo a major renovation and the roads on the avenue should also be redeveloped… In short, the district is undergoing a spectacular transformation.
It must be said that the municipality of Ixelles has been able to take advantage of the proliferation of these projects as well as the growing attractiveness of the university district to encourage developers to build housing on this section of little-used avenue and, until now, mainly occupied by garages.
” It is an ideal place to develop student accommodation. The students don’t bother anyone there, we can create high quality buildings for them. This portion of Avenue de la Couronne was characterized by significant automobile activity. All this activity is changing and is in the process of being relocated to the outskirts so we have real estate vacancies and opportunities for developers ” explains Yves Rouyet, Ixelles town planning alderman.
In total, nearly a thousand housing units are expected to be built in the neighborhood.
