Special trip to Liverpool for Laois Comhaltas group

Alright, folks, gather ’round! We’ve got a delightful ensemble of banter and culture in Liverpool featuring the Spink Comhaltas. And let me tell you, it’s not just a gig; it’s a full-blown Irish love-in like you’ve never seen before!

Imagine this: 47 musicians on a bus, loaded with instruments and a history book that’s likely thicker than the average Irish stew recipe! These brave souls embark on a midnight adventure across the sea. They must really love the sound of their own pipes—yes, Uilleann pipes, not the bathroom variety!

So, they perform at the Irish Centre in Liverpool, catching up with legendary Laois emigrants. I mean, what’s better than catching a few tunes while reminiscing about how hard it is to get a decent pint in a ‘pub’ without them trying to get you to drink craft beers with names like "Hops of Fury"? I don’t know about you, but if I wanted that, I’d just stick to my usual—water!

But wait! It gets deep! They pay homage at the Hillsborough Memorial, and one musician played “Easter Snow” on the Uilleann pipes—a haunting tribute to the victims. You can tell it hit home, especially with the Irish names on the memorial. Honestly, this is about as emotional as a first date where the only thing harder to find than each other’s eyes is a waiter!

Back to the fun, later that very evening, Spink Comhaltas hits the stage in the Irish Centre, sharing the limelight with the Liverpool Comhaltas Group, The Lowlands Ceilí Band, and the Liverpool Ceilí Band! It’s a proper jam session which unequivocally sends a message: when the Irish get together, you better be ready to dance…and I mean dance like your uncle at a wedding after a few too many shandies!

What really warmed the cockles of my heart was the branch secretary, Maria Dunne, getting all emotional as the Liverpool Comhaltas Chairman, Chris Boland, serenaded her with a song about her beloved Mayo. Nothing says affection like singing about back roads and rivalries! It’s almost poetic, or as poetic as mentioning a potato field!

In short, this trip wasn’t just about music; it was about heritage, community, and a sweet slice of nostalgia tied up in melodies and memories. Thank you, Spink Comhaltas! If there’s one lesson to take away from this, it’s that no matter how far you roam, there’s always a tune that can bring you back home…or at least to the nearest pub!

So let’s raise a glass—preferably a pint of Guinness—because this event was a smashing success, with community spirit bubbling like a well-made Irish stew! Now, who’s got the next round? 🍻
