Confession, Commitment and Rejoicing

“I must confess that my presence at this session is nothing more than the fulfillment of my responsibility to my parents, my husband, my children, my friends, my comrades in social and political struggle, my fellow countrymen, my neighbors from nearby towns, civil, ecclesiastical, and military authorities and special guests present here,” she said.

“Don’t think that it was easy for me to accept this commitment, but as the native women of the town of San Genaro we are as big as the commitment that life presents to us, here we are assuming and fulfilling our word, as many of you know, since I have been characterized from a very young age by having an identity and belonging to San Genaro, its people and their needs,” she indicated.

“I tell you that the same day that the decision of the municipal council was made official, I could not be less joyful, so much so that that same day after having fulfilled my work responsibilities, I went straight to my mother’s house, “La Catira”, who better than her who brought me into the world to share that moment and make her part of my joy,” he said.

Magic, charm, faith and devotion

“Once back at her mother’s house, we had a long and pleasant conversation where she recalled that day in September 1977, when she and my father Juan Vásquez arrived and settled in San Genaro, a magical and charming place (…), she recalled.

“My mother also told me about the fervor, devotion and faith that the local Catholic congregation expressed through the various apostolic groups that existed at that time within the old chapel, which was made manifest during the daily celebration of the Eucharist and the Holy Rosary in this holy place that today serves as the headquarters of organized Catholic groups of San Gennaro,” she recalled.

“Likewise, my mother “La Catira” told me about the magic and charm that was once displayed during the celebration and development of the patron saint festivities in honor of our patron saint “San Genaro,” she added.

“From those years, I remember the merriment that took place around the greased pole, or when the greased pig was released, the sack races, the egg-and-spoon game, the competition of strength or tension, the festival of songs with melodies alluding to San Gennaro (…)”, he stressed.

Lived stories

“Regarding the development of the procession on the central day, I remember that it was led by different civil authorities of the municipality and the former Valera district, and also by ecclesiastical authorities representing surrounding communities and the Diocese of Trujillo. That day, it went through the avenues and streets of the town, and was enlivened by wind music from Maestro Juan Peña’s band (…)”, he narrated.

“There are so many experiences and stories lived in my beloved town of San Genaro that a whole day would not be enough to tell them. Finally, I would like to thank you for your presence and patience in listening to me.

Happy Day. God bless you all,” Yamilet Vásquez concluded her talk on San Gennaro.
