SPECIAL: First impressions of the Philips OLED807 in 65 inches and the Fidelio Soundbar FB1 plus Sub FW1

02.09.2022 (Carsten Rampacher)

We already have detailed information about the Philips OLED807the smallest OLED series with OLED EX panel, and the Fidelio Soundbar FB1 plus the active wireless subwoofer FW1 written. At IFA 2022, we now had the opportunity to capture the first image and sound impressions of a combination of the OLED807 in 65 inches (EUR 2,999) and the Fidelio FB1 as well as the matching active wireless subwoofer. The Philips 807 is the smallest OLED series with a particularly bright (1,300 nits) OLED EX panel. The OLED+937 has the OLEX EX Panel of the highest standards (“Royal” in internal parlance) and offers even more.

OLED807 and Fidelio Soundbar

Typical of Philips OLED TVs, the OLED807 has an AI-capable image processor (sixth generation P5) and a wide range of setting options for image, sound and Ambilight, for example.

First of all, the following items are represented in the basic menu (we spare our readers the screenshots – too many reflections at the fair):

  • Bild
  • Ton

The OLED807 convinces with extensive picture setting options

If we call up the “Advanced” menu item in the image settings, these options appear:

The Ambilight settings are always important with Philips:

  • Ambilight extension
  • advanced

Now let’s take a look at the picture and sound quality.

Paris from above

We watch sequences that show Paris from many perspectives – from the air, in detail, by day and by night. The enormous image brightness is immediately noticeable here, despite the clear incidence of external light on the Expert stand at IFA 2022. From a bird’s eye view, you can see the division of the city districts and the streets very well – even from a great distance you can see individual windows in the buildings and recognizes details on the roofs. The image is optimized accordingly by the in-house AI mode.

The colors are strong and saturated, which is typical for a trade fair presentation, where a certain “wow” effect is always to be created. At home you would prefer a more natural setting, which is not a problem with Philips because there is no fixed AI mode, but you can still adjust a few parameters yourself. The picture is very calm, looks homogeneous and coherent. Movements don’t jerk and the panel hardly shows any noise even when you look closely. The new “Clarity” picture mode is active at the fair. The Arc de Triomphe in Paris, shot from high above, with numerous moving cars grouped around it, looks realistic, and even the tiny vehicles are really easy to differentiate. The individual trees are also well differentiated from each other, the different shades of green and green/brown come out cleanly. The picture looks natural, doesn’t overdo it, always remains believable.

Pyramid in the Louvre at night

Outstanding attention to detail

As the legendary Eiffel Tower comes into view, the OLED807 presents us with the iron, scaffolding-like structure of the landmark built for the Paris World Exhibition in 1887. Nothing jerks here, nothing trembles here – a top performance. The Philips also portrays a boat navigating the Seine in a first-class manner, including the wake, whose wave-like, foaming aura is clearly recognizable even from a bird’s-eye view. The pyramid at the Louvre at night proves how well contrasting image content can be displayed: the night is impressively black, the lighting elements are impressively bright, radiant and clearly differentiated. There’s no such thing as inappropriate overexposure.
