Nearly 30 years following the release of his hit “Birima”, mbalax legend Youssou Ndour makes it the subject of his very first musical tale. Combining song, theater and dance, “Birima” tells the story of King Birima Ngoné Latyr Fall who reigned from 1855 to 1859 in Cayor, a pre-colonial kingdom located to the west of present-day Senegal. This sovereign loved by all his subjects, who nicknamed him “Borom mbaboor mi” (the bringer of joy), is still celebrated today in the country of Teranga. A successful entrepreneur, the internationally renowned artist also tells us regarding his foundation, the Youssou Ndour Foundation for cultural and creative industries, which aims in particular to provide professional opportunities to 100,000 young people.
Many thanks to Michelle Makaroff, Michelle Lahana and Emmanuelle Chanlat.
