Speaker of the Seimas: the president’s proposal on pensions may be approved

“We will vote on him today. I predict that after the submission, this proposal will probably be approved,” its head said in the Seimas on Tuesday.

In the Seimas, on Tuesday, the president’s representatives should present their arguments regarding the country’s leader’s amendments.

Last Thursday, the opposition, fearing that the changes would not be supported by those in power and therefore not having enough votes to start considering them in the Seimas, asked to postpone the introduction of the initiated changes.

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and Conservative Mindaugas Lingė, Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee of the Seimas, have suggested that corrections should be made after receiving an explanation from the Constitutional Court (CT).

In April, the Constitutional Court decided to examine the request of 39 members of the opposition, whether the Pension Accumulation Law does not contradict the highest law of the country, which does not provide for the condition for the resident to terminate the pension accumulation contract.

According to V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, it would be logical to receive the verdict of the Supreme Court before adopting changes to the law.

“We should wait, we should do the dating correctly,” she said.

As Irena Segalovičienė, advisor to the country’s leader, told BNS earlier, the president is convinced that it would be a big mistake for decision-makers to “crouch and tremble in a corner under the guise of waiting for the Constitutional Court’s decision.”

Not addressing the issue “could be disastrous,” she said.
