For Mairead Golden and Gavin O’Donovan, their story began on a crisp New Year’s Day two years ago. “We matched on Tinder and had our first date a week later—at Soma in Cork city,” Mairead reminisces with a warm smile. What started as a simple swipe soon blossomed into a whirlwind romance that neither coudl have anticipated.

From the moment they met,their connection was undeniable. Just two and a half months later, on March 23, they found themselves shopping for engagement rings.“We waited until December of that year to make it official, but I think we both felt engaged from about two months after we met,” Mairead shares.Their relationship moved at its own pace, a testament to the idea that when love is right, you simply know.

Fast forward to their wedding day, and the couple, now living in Rathcoole, celebrated their union with a heartfelt humanist ceremony at The Belfry in Ballyseede Castle, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Officiated by Edel O’Flynn, the ceremony was as unique as their love story. The reception followed at the same enchanting venue, surrounded by loved ones who had gathered to share in their joy.

Arriving in a beautifully restored vintage car from christy Buckley Vintage Hire, the couple made a grand entrance that set the tone for the day. “Even if we hit every roadwork and red light from here to Tralee, luckily we had left in plenty of time,” Mairead joked. The day was filled with laughter, heartfelt moments, and a few delightful surprises.

Photographer Sarah Kate Murphy captured every detail, while WedFilms documented the day on video. “We did a ‘first look’ before the ceremony and took most of the photos then. It was great to see each other for a while before all the madness started,” Mairead shared. this intimate moment allowed the couple to savor their connection before the festivities began.

Family played a central role in the celebration. Mairead’s parents, Martina and Pat Golden, and Gavin’s parents, Patricia and Kevin O’Donovan, were at the heart of the day. The bridal party included bridesmaids Helen Murphy,Carol Dillon,and Kate O’Donovan,while the groomsmen featured best man Gavin Minihane,Kieran O’Donovan,and Daniel Golden.

for Mairead and Gavin, the day was all about creating a warm and joyful atmosphere. “We wanted it to be full of love and happiness,” Mairead said. “we had 100 guests and one incredibly well-behaved baby — which was perfect.” Their wedding was a true reflection of their personalities: welcoming, inclusive, and overflowing with love.

Mairead Golden, glowing in a breathtaking wedding gown from The Moderne in Cork, walked down the aisle at Ballyseede Castle, her father Pat Golden by her side. Her dress, a masterpiece of timeless elegance, was paired with a cherished family heirloom—her grandmother’s wedding ring. “This was very special to me,” Mairead shared, her voice filled with emotion as she reflected on the sentimental value of the ring.

Gavin O’Donovan, a proud Gaeilgeoir, ensured their wedding was steeped in Irish traditions. “We wanted to bring in as much of that as we could, so we had some readings and songs done in Irish,” Mairead explained. Gavin looked dashing in a tailored suit from morley’s in Cork, standing proudly alongside his best man, Gavin Minihane, and groomsmen Kieran O’Donovan and Daniel Golden.

The bridal party’s beauty was elevated by the skilled team at Eurostyles in Millstreet, who handled hairstyling, and makeup artist Georgina Mackessy. The floral arrangements, designed by Maura Sheehy of maura’s Cottage Flowers, brought a natural elegance to the venue. “maura also provided fresh flowers for my hair, which were lovely,” Mairead recalled, her smile evident even in her words.

One of the most unique touches was the live painting by artist Rachel leahy, who created portraits of guests as wedding favors. The entertainment was another highlight, with the band Truly Diverse keeping the energy high throughout the night. “The dance floor didn’t empty for the night!” Mairead exclaimed, her excitement palpable.

The ceremony was accompanied by a soulful rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love, performed by Niamh Murphy, who also provided music during the drinks reception. Mairead’s dedication to personalizing the day extended to her playlist, as she emailed DJ Bryan McDonnell at 5:30 a.m. on her wedding day to ensure every detail was perfect.
