Spar Switzerland: Falling Sales, Rising Profits

Spar Switzerland Navigates Challenging Market with Focus on Efficiency and Customer Value

The Swiss retail landscape is constantly in flux, demanding adaptability and strategic foresight. This year, Spar Switzerland has risen to the challenge, prioritising margin improvement through operational efficiency even amidst a slightly lower sales volume.

Designated CEO Gary Alberts emphasizes, “This year, our focus shifted toward one key objective: bolstering our profit margins through streamlined operations. While this meant accepting some short-term reductions in sales, we believe this strategic approach is essential for long-term success.”

Despite these calculated sales adjustments, Spar Switzerland achieved a slightly higher profit, demonstrating the effectiveness of its cost management strategies. Notably, a one-time provision of 1,724 million francs for long-service employee benefits was recorded in 2024. Without this event, the company’s "Trading Profit" would have been significantly higher.

"While sales are undoubtedly important, they shouldn’t come at any cost," Alberts explains. "Strong margins are what empower us to reinvest in new store formats, expand our product range, and ultimately, support our valued employees."

Spar Switzerland’s commitment to providing customers with stable and competitive prices has been crucial in a market characterised by unpredictable procurement costs.

"By implementing robust cost controls, we’ve been able to offer consistent pricing, which provides our customers with a sense of certainty during their daily shopping decisions," Alberts adds.

Innovations Catering to Evolving Needs

Spar Switzerland is dedicated to continuously refining its offerings, taking into account demographic shifts and consumer needs. Recognizing the growing trend towards convenience, the company recently introduced a "Fresh To Go" section featuring fresh, ready-to-cook meals. Initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Another strategic move has been the success of Spar’s own brands, which now represent almost a quarter of total sales. "Our own brands allow us to deliver exceptional quality at affordable prices," Alberts notes.

Spar Switzerland is also embracing innovative approaches to online shopping. In several Swiss cities, customers can now place orders online and have them delivered via partnered external providers, a flexible solution that saves the company from needing its own delivery infrastructure.
