The heads of Internal Medicine Service and Unit of Spanish hospital centers met in Granada this past weekend (September 23) at the XXIII Meeting of Service and Unit Heads organized by the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) to discuss clinical management, organization and excellence in specialty services and to address new projects and initiatives that improve patient care and promote quality of care at all levels.
The meeting, inaugurated by Juana Carretero, president of the SEMI, had different tables in which, among other topics, shared care in the Internal Medicine Services, the opportunities and challenges posed by the so-called specific training areas, the vocation to be an internist in future generations of doctors, the evaluation of quality indicators in Internal Medicine, the recertification of Services, Functional Units and professionals, or the role that the internist must play in the face of phenomena such as climate change.
During the meeting it was announced that SEMI has begun the recertification of the first Internal Medicine Services that were accredited with the SEMI Excellent seal five years ago. The first hospitals to now achieve the recertification of said quality seal obtained in 2018 for its Internal Medicine Service have been the Rey Juan Carlos University Hospital in Móstoles and the Infanta Cristina University Hospital in Parla. Both have been awarded a diploma accrediting the “SEMI Excellent” recertification.
In the words of Carretero: “one more year the SEMI reaffirms its commitment to continuous improvement and the search for excellence through a meeting that has been configured as an essential event to share synergies and analyze new projects that result in greater quality in the care we provide to our patients, with the focus on increasingly personalized medicine focused on the real needs of the people we serve in our services and units.”
This annual meeting, which SEMI has been organizing since 2000 and which has brought together nearly a hundred attendees in this edition, allows the exchange of experiences and the analysis of measures and programs that allow us to advance, increasingly, on the path of excellence in the care provided by the Internal Medicine Services in the National Health System (SNS).
