(CNN) — Spanish soccer player Jennifer Hermoso officially filed a complaint against the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, a spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office told CNN.
“Yesterday, Mrs. Jennifer Hermoso filed a complaint for the facts that you all know. The National Court Prosecutor’s Office will file a complaint as soon as possible, which will be forwarded to her, as well as a press release,” the spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The statement took place at the State Attorney General’s Office to protect the privacy of the victim, the spokesman added.
Spanish prosecutors had opened an investigation into Rubiales on August 28, saying they would contact her within two weeks to “inform her of her rights as a victim of an alleged crime of sexual assault.”
Hermoso’s legal complaint is the next necessary step for the Spanish Justice to proceed with a case against Rubiales, who has refused to resign as RFEF president.
Rubiales has apologized and described the kiss as “mutual” after Spain’s victory in the World Cup final on August 20, a claim that Hermoso has denied, saying he was disrespected. FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, has suspended Rubiales for 90 days while disciplinary proceedings are pending.
The incident caused a strong shock in Spanish football: the Government demanded the resignation of Rubiales and the RFEF has dismissed Jorge Vilda as women’s national coach. He was replaced by Montse Tomé, the first woman in the history of the Spanish team to hold that position.
