Regional and local elections are taking place in Spain today. Around 35 million voters are called upon to elect the parliaments of twelve of the 17 Spanish regions. In addition, the municipal councils in the approximately 8,100 municipalities in the state are determined.

Mood test for Sanchez

The election is considered an important yardstick for the upcoming national parliamentary elections at the end of the year, in which the fate of the minority government of Social Democratic Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will be decided.

The social-democratic PSOE governs in ten of the twelve regions in which voting takes place on Sunday. The conservative People’s Party (PP) hopes to replace the PSOE in up to six of these regions. With such an electoral success, the PP under party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo wants to gain momentum for the national parliamentary elections, the exact date of which has not yet been set. The election campaign for the local and regional elections was overshadowed by scandals surrounding alleged vote-buying in individual locations.
