Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tested positive for Covid-19

The head of the Spanish government Pedro Sánchez announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and had temporarily suspended his schedule, a few days following taking part in the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“This morning, I tested positive for Covid-19”, announced the Prime Minister on Twitter, specifying to cancel his visit to the “Festival of the rose” of the Party of Socialists of Catalonia (PSC), organized on Sunday in Gava near Barcelona (North-East).

“I will continue to work taking extreme precautions,” Sanchez added, however.

This announcement comes two days following his return from New York where he participated in several events within the framework of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, in the company of many heads of state and government.

The head of the Spanish government did not specify at this stage whether he would maintain his participation in the events scheduled for the rest of the week.

In particular, he is due to welcome eight heads of state and government from countries in the south of the European Union to Alicante (south-east) on Friday, on the occasion of a meeting of the Med-7 forum.
