Spanish PM Calls for Recognition of Palestinian State: EU’s Interest and Stability in the Region

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Thursday that it was “in the interest” of the European Union to recognize the Palestinian state, a step he said was necessary to put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to “stabilize” the region. “It is obvious that we must find a political solution to end this crisis and this solution involves, in my opinion, the recognition of the Palestinian state,” assured the socialist head of government in an interview on public television RTVE.

This recognition is “in the interest of Europe”, for “a moral reason, because what we see in Gaza is not acceptable”, but also “geopolitical”, because it will contribute to “stabilization” the region, he continued. Pedro Sánchez, reappointed at the end of November for a new four-year term as part of a coalition with the far left, pledged during his inauguration speech to “work in Europe and in Spain to recognize the State Palestinian”.
