The Joint Commission of the European Union, made up of representatives of the Spanish Congress and Senate, unanimously approved on Wednesday a request to the administration of Nicolás Maduro to allow the European Union to be an international observer in the presidential elections of July 28.
This proposal, presented by the conservative Popular Party (PP), raised, among other issues, the need to promote dialogue with opposition groups in Venezuela and condemn the government’s refusal to allow the EU to participate in the elections.
The proposal of the PP, the majority party in both chambers, received the support of the Socialists, the second largest party, which presides over the Spanish Government, with the support of other groups, as well as that of the rest of the parliamentary groups.
Last year, the administration of Nicolás Maduro and the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) signed agreements that contemplated holding presidential elections in the second half of 2024.
It also included observation by technical missions from the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN), among other international organisations.
