Spanish opera star Placido Domingo faces new misconduct charges

Spanish opera star Placido Domingo was exposed Sunday to new accusations of sexual harassment from a Spanish singer. These accusations join similar allegations made by dozens of singers, dancers, musicians and others three years ago that Domingo had behaved inappropriately once morest them, for which he apologized and was absent from the limelight for a long time.

In a television program broadcast on Sunday, Spanish opera star Placido Domingo faced new accusations sexual harassment from a fellow Spanish singer, following 3 years of similar accusations that prompted him to apologize and curtail his career.

In an investigation conducted in 2020, more than 36 singers, dancers, musicians, teachers and employees said that they had witnessed or experienced inappropriate behavior from Domingo, 83, over a period of 3 decades. Domingo did not admit any wrongdoing.

The latest accusation came from an unknown singer during an interview with the Spanish TV channel “La Sexta”.

The singer, whose face was shaded, said Domingo asked to put his hand on her body while they were in a theater in Spain at the beginning of the twenty-first century. On another occasion, she said, he tried to kiss her.

“One of the first things they tell you is not to get in the elevator alone with Placido Domingo,” the woman told La Sexta.

She recounted how Domingo asked to put his hand on her body following rehearsing a work of art.

Representatives for the opera singer did not respond to a request for comment.

A 2020 investigation by the American Guild of Musical Artists concluded that Domingo had acted inappropriately.

Domingo said in a statement at the time that he respected the women’s decisions to speak out, and that he “truly regrets the harm he has caused them.”

The results of the investigation prompted the cancellation of performances in which Domingo was scheduled to take part in publicly funded theaters in Spain.

American institutions, including New York’s Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera, have canceled similar performances.

Domingo resigned as general manager of the Los Angeles Opera, whose investigation found 10 allegations once morest him to be “credible.”

No criminal case has been brought to court over any of the allegations.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo in January 2022, Domingo denied harassing anyone and said he felt condemned in the court of public opinion because he did not speak up.

Domingo returned to Spain to perform at a charity concert in June last year, following an absence of nearly a year and a half, and performed in other countries.
