The Federation of Associations of Journalists of Spain (FAPE) and the Madrid Press Association (APM) have condemned this Wednesday the arrests of journalists in Venezuela and have demanded their release, while repudiating the maneuvers of the government of Nicolás Maduro against the media.

Spanish journalists’ associations express their solidarity with the at least eight journalists arrested by Venezuelan police forces in the days following the elections on 28 July, as well as with the other four journalists arrested during the pre-election campaign.

FAPE joins the Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Journalists (FEPALC) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), to which it belongs, in reiterating in a statement their concern at the continued arrests of journalists and press workers following the elections in Venezuela and calling for the release of their arrested colleagues.

Cases

In many of these cases, the reporters have been charged with inciting hatred and terrorism, which, says FAPE, sets a dangerous precedent and deepens the already serious situation of media workers throughout the region.

According to the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) of Venezuela, 12 journalists remain in prison, of which at least four have been charged with the crime of “terrorism.”

On Monday, the union warned on social media about “illegal and arbitrary use of anti-terrorism laws (…), especially against journalists and photojournalists arrested during post-election protests.”
