Spanish Government Spy Allegations: European Parliament Calls for Thorough Investigation into Pegasus Software

The European Parliament called, this Thursday, for Spain to carry out a thorough investigation into allegations of spying on members of the government, including President Pedro Sánchez, using Pegasus software. According to a report voted on in committee, there would be “indications” of Morocco’s involvement. The document demands that an investigation also be carried out into spying on pro-independence leaders during trials in Catalonia.

These requests were approved by the European Parliament as part of a report on the use of Pegasus spyware in Europe. This report was adopted in committee in May, with the support of the People’s Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), while Ciudadanos abstained. For its part, Vox voted against.

Specifically, the report calls for a “full, fair and effective investigation”, during which all cases of alleged espionage with Pegasus will be clarified, including the 47 cases relating to the Catalan independence movement and the question of whether the CNI played a role in connection with a judicial warrant.

Indeed, this new initiative of the European Parliament seems untimely since the MEPs persist in wanting an investigation into the accusations of espionage although the Spanish government has officially rejected them.
