The Spanish government wants to ban mobiles in schools, colleges and high schools in the face of “concerns” they arouse among some families and teachers, the Executive announced on Wednesday.

The Spanish Ministry of Education “proposes zero use of mobile phones during class hours in primary and secondary schools unless”, in middle and high school, “the teacher deems it necessary for the educational activity”, has indicated the administration in a press release.

“Growing concern”

The Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, intends to “respond to the concerns shared by so many families and the educational community”, she explained following a meeting with the regions, responsible for matters of education. This is why the central government will first have to reach an agreement with the regions during a next meeting scheduled for early January.

“There is growing concern in our society” on this subject, underlined the socialist minister. In Spain, a growing number of parent communities are demanding a ban or stricter regulation of the use of cell phones at school. Recent surveys by the OECD and UNESCO have pointed to a negative effect of excessive use of smartphones on the attention and learning of students in several countries.
