The Spanish Federation sets the date for the election of Rubiales’ successor
The Spanish Football Federation has chosen the date for electing the successor to the resigned president, Luis Rubiales, following his involvement in the Gheni Hermoso scandal during La Roja’s women’s celebrations of the 2023 FIFA World Cup title in Sydney.
According to what was published by the Spanish newspaper “Sport” on Thursday, officials of the Spanish Football Association decided, following a consultation and reflection session led by the interim president, Pedro Rocha, that the first third of the year 2024 would be the date for electing a new president to succeed Rubiales.
The Spanish Federation witnessed an unusual movement in the recent period between resignations and dismissals of members of the body, as it came in light of internal investigations, the most recent of whom was Secretary-General Andrew Camps, who accompanied Rubiales on his mission since 2018.
Rocha will continue to lead the body during the coming period and manage the work of the national teams. Also, choosing the date for electing a new president would discourage the women’s national team players from going on strike, as he announced his refusal to represent “La Roja” in the coming period, until the federation is “cleansed” of its members. “All the people who wreaked havoc on it,” in their estimation.
The problems of the Spanish Federation came during a sensitive period before the start of football competitions, and this is a factor that Spanish clubs fear will be affected by it in European participation, especially since their reputation has been damaged in the recent period by criticism from all sides.
