The teams had a second hour of testing at the Barcelona circuit, as part of the Spanish F1 Grand Prix. Still under the sun, since the threatening storm at the end of EL1 passed by, these EL2s saw the teams work more on performance.

As in the early followingnoon, the teams had a set of test tires in view of Silverstone, where Pirelli will bring an all-new construction to its products, to better withstand the loads and speeds that the 2023 single-seaters put on them. .

From the start of the session, the Red Bull drivers were at the forefront, and in particular Verstappen, who was ahead of the Ferraris despite using less efficient tyres. But at the start of the session the times were not very evocative.

George Russell complained of heavy tailgating in the final sector, and to make matters worse, the Mercedes F1 driver was hampered by Oscar Piastri during one of his fast laps. The drivers then all put on slick tyres, which made it possible to settle the hierarchy a little.

Sainz took the best time in 1’14″274, quickly beaten by Leclerc in 1’14″246. But this time did not last long since Verstappen was on a fast lap on soft rubber, and the Dutchman regained control in 1’13″907.

Esteban Ocon, third this morning, climbed back to the top of the standings, in second place, four thousandths of a second ahead of Leclerc. Nico Hülkenberg proved to be surprising by seeking the provisional second place.

Lewis Hamilton set the absolute best time in the first sector, but the seven-time world champion might not do better than seventh, behind Valtteri Bottas and Pierre Gasly, who had placed just behind the Ferraris.

Fernando Alonso, discreet since the start of the weekend, is finally back at the forefront, with second place 0″170 behind Verstappen. Russell placed seventh between the Ferraris and Bottas.

The rest of the session was devoted mainly to testing long stints. The hierarchy therefore did not move for the rest of these EL2s, the differences between which were tiny.

Indeed, there were 17 cars in one second. Verstappen set the best time of this session ahead of Alonso and Hülkenberg. Sergio Pérez was fourth ahead of Ocon, the Ferraris, Russell, Bottas and Gasly. The Frenchman, tenth, was just 0.550 behind Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton was 11th ahead of Oscar Piastri, Guanyu Zhou and Lando Norris. Magnussen followed ahead of the AlphaTauri, Lance Stroll and Williams F1 drivers.
