Today, the role is occupied by Ricardo Díez-Hotchleitner, who has headed the Spanish embassy in Rabat for more than eight years.
As for his expected successor, Ojeda, his diplomatic experience is vast, but he has mainly done it in Latin America. He began his career in Bolivia and Guatemala between 2006 and 2011, then was assigned to El Salvador in 2011 and 2012 before returning to Bolivia for a year and joining Chile, where he worked between 2018 and 2021.
From 2021, more precisely in July, he took over the management of Casa América, a political, cultural and economic meeting forum between Spain and Latin American countries.
Although his diplomatic experience has focused on the American continent, he has also worked with Morocco. For five years, he directed the Fundación Tres Culturas, created in 1998 by Morocco and the Junta de Andalucía to promote dialogue between “the peoples and cultures of the Mediterranean”.
If Ojeda is appointed Spanish ambassador to Rabat, he will occupy one of the most important positions in Madrid’s diplomacy. Relations between Rabat and Madrid are never free from tensions for migration, fishing or commercial reasons. However, they have improved significantly since the Spanish government recognized that the Moroccan proposal constituted the most effective solution. “serious, realistic and credible” to resolve the Sahara conflict, bringing relations between Spain and our eastern neighbors to a standstill.
In the years to come, the bilateral relationship with Morocco will be marked by the preparation for the 2030 World Cup, in which Portugal will also participate.
