During a trip to Santiago that concluded this Thursday, the Spanish deputy Hanna Jalloul, assured that the Government of Gabriel Boric marks the beginning of a change in the Latin American left. “Boric has started a government listening and agreeing a lot, in a very thoughtful way,” she said.
The deputy in the Assembly of Madrid and secretary of International Policy and Development Cooperation of the PSOE, Hanna Jalloul, assured that the Government of Gabriel Boric marks the beginning of a change in the Latin American left.
These statements were made during a trip to Santiago that ended this Thursday.
“We believe that this left that is born here in Chile is a left that turns a lot to social democracy. Sometimes it is compared to the left before, but this is a renewed and more social democratic movement, ”said Jalloul, who met with the Chilean president during his visit.
The socialist added that the Government of Boric, who on March 11 took office at 36 as the youngest and most voted ruler in Chilean history, is “different” from that of other leftist leaders in the region such as the Peruvian Pedro Castillo, that it does not enjoy “such a broad level of consolidation and legitimacy”.
Government of Gabriel Boric
The deputy also stated that “Boric has started a government listening and agreeing a lot, in a very thoughtful way.”
The Chilean president leads a coalition between the Broad Front and the Communist Party but has also been able to incorporate “democratic socialism,” added Jalloul, referring to the presence in the Executive of figures from parties of the traditional and moderate left.
About the process constituent that is being carried out in our country, the Madrid deputy praised that it is “a transparent process” and highly participatory in which many regulations are developed in the areas of education, health, feminism, abortion or trans laws.
“These are fundamental things that a Constitution must reflect and that is what the Chilean population demands. We find it wonderful and we support it,” he said.
The Sahara issue
Jalloul also addressed the recent change in the Spanish Government’s position on Morocco and assured that Pedro Sánchez has put the option of autonomy on the table but “has not touched on the Saharawi issue”, which “can only be solved if both parties want and within the framework of the United Nations”.
“It is legitimate that as a government we take a step forward to try to solve the conflict we have with Morocco. We have many precedents that have taken this path, France, Germany, the United States (…) We have not gone off the script, ”he said.
Contemplating the autonomy option is also a way of “defending the interests of Spain”, he added, since it might allow “improving relations with neighboring countries” from which the Iberian Peninsula receives a large migratory flow.
During his visit, Jalloul also met with other government authorities such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola; the mining minister, Marcela Hernando; the president of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde; and Senator Isabel Allende.
