Mexico City, February 17 (EFE).- The Spanish bullfighter Alejandro Talavante and the Mexicans Octavio García ‘El Payo’ and Héctor Gutiérrez bullfight this Sunday in the fifth bullfight of the Reopening Series of the Plaza Monumental in Mexico.
The matadors will fight cattle from Villa Carmela. The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT).
After four bullfights in which more than 130,000 people have attended the bullring in the capital of Mexico, the fifth celebration of the fair has arrived. And it does so following confirmation by the judge who provisionally suspended the bullfights in La Plaza México on January 31, that there will be no cancellation. This decision was made on February 13 following the session with the association that presented the protection for its ban.
Weeks of anxiety following more than a year of temporary ban for fans who will finally be able to continue enjoying the art of spooning.
The appointment with Talavante is the Spaniard’s reunion with a place in which he has not bullfighted since his momentary retirement in 2018. To this decision that concluded with his return to the ring in 2020, was added first the Pandemic and then the suspension of giving bullfighting celebrations in La México.
It has been six years without doing the parade in the capital’s square. Enclosure where he opened the front door on different occasions and even cut off a tail that he did not want to pick up on February 18, 2013.
If something sums up Talavante’s presence in Mexico City, it is the discarded and poorly presented cattle that he has faced.

His return to the ring in Mexico, he reappeared in Aguascalientes on May 1, 2022, has not been what was expected in terms of bullfighting. He has generally been erratic. In Bilbao on August 24, he left signs of the bullfighter he was before his temporary goodbye, but generally disappointment accompanied his return.
Talavante is announced in four runs for this year’s San Isidro Fair in Madrid. In 2023 he fought in Las Ventas five times. Eleven bulls fought, a single ear and a live bull is the poor result.
Next to Talavante, the young Héctor Gutiérrez returns to Plaza México following a 2023 of triumphs in which he has put his name among the new figures of the generation of 2022. His consecutive successes in plazas such as Mérida, Aguascalientes and Pachuca have become a fixture at Mexican fairs.
The veteran Octavio García ‘El Payo’ closes the line-up. He just arrived from his presentation at the Jalostottilán Carnival Fair where he only left a set of three right hands worth remembering.
The running of the bulls in Villa Carmela points to another bullfight without caste except surprise. The livestock farm was founded in 1940.
