ABU DHABI, 14th August, 2020 (WAM) — The Spanish and Australian national teams are looking forward to continuing their historic start in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the tournament, currently being held in Australia and New Zealand, reaching the semi-finals.
Each of the two teams is facing a difficult challenge in facing experience during the penultimate leg of the competition; The Spanish national team will meet its Swedish counterpart, who reached the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup more than once.
The Australian national team will meet its English counterpart, who played the same role in the past two editions, and will also participate in the current edition, one year following winning the European Nations Cup (Euro 2022).
So far, the Spanish and Australian teams have achieved a great and unprecedented achievement in the Women’s World Cup, as neither of them had ever reached the golden square in the history of their previous participation in the tournament.
The best previous achievement of the Spanish national team in the Women’s World Cup was reaching the round of 16 in the last version in 2019 in France, but the team is currently looking forward to continuing its successful career in the current version and reaching the final, scheduled for August 20.
After passing the group stage, the Spanish national team achieved a huge 5-1 victory in the round of 16 over its Swiss counterpart, then overthrew the Dutch team, the runner-up of the defending champions, by beating it 2-1 in a match that extended to extra time in the quarter-finals to find itself facing a third European test in a row. Face the Swedish team tomorrow on the ticket to qualify for the final.
The Swedish national team has previously participated in the semi-final activities 4 previous times, and passed this role in the 2003 edition to obtain the runner-up title at the end of the tournament. It also won the runner-up title in each of the last two editions of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.
Sweden’s striker Fridolina Rulfo said, “I feel completely impressed that we reached the semi-finals in this World Cup. This is what I dreamed of as a girl,” referring to the strength of competition in the tournament.
And regarding the confrontation once morest the Spanish national team in the semi-finals, Rolfo, who plays for the Spanish team Barcelona, said that she encouraged her colleagues in Barcelona during their career with the Spanish national team throughout the various roles in the current World Cup.
And she added, “I wanted them to continue to break out in the tournament and go further than this, but I think they have reached enough now,” referring to her desire to stop the Spanish start during the semi-finals and qualify the Swedish team for the final.
In the other semi-final confrontation, the Australian national team faces the experience of its English counterpart the day following tomorrow, Wednesday, but it relies a lot on the great public support that the team received in the current tournament while continuing its successful start, especially following overcoming the hurdles of Denmark and France in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, respectively.
The best previous achievement of the Australian team in the Women’s World Cup was reaching the quarter-finals in 3 versions of the tournament, but it will now run a fierce race to qualify for the final, which is also the goal of the England team, as it has never reached the World Cup final.
