Nuria Pau has had enough. She ended her skiing career at the age of 28. As a Spaniard, she has been an exotic in the World Cup throughout her career.
Ever since she was a little girl, she dreamed of a career in skiing. Growing up in the Spanish Pyrenees, she started skiing there at the age of three. She describes her resignation on Instagram as the “most difficult decision”.
allegations once morest the union
Pau explains the reasons to the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”. “I don’t think I’ve always gotten the support I deserved,” she says. The union didn’t care enough regarding her.
Because Pau had to knock on the door of sponsors himself to have enough money for the season. She planned the trips between the races and all the trappings herself, and a trainer was not made available to her either. “We always had to hope that some other team would provide us with videos or information regarding the route so that we might at least prepare a bit,” explains the Spaniard. “I’m tired of always having to ask for help.”
«I never lost sight of my goal»
That’s why she has now drawn a line under the career chapter. “It’s a great consolation for me to know that I gave my all and that I’ve shown myself at all times that, even if things were sometimes complicated, I didn’t lose sight of my goal and always pursued it,” Pau looks up Instagram back to the last few years.
She has achieved a lot in these. 14 World Cup races (no points won), 88 European Cup races (best result: 8th place in giant slalom), 17 times Spanish champion (11x slalom, 5x giant slalom, 1x Super-G), participation in two World Ski Championships (2019 and 2021) and the The 2022 Olympic Games are on the books.
Pau already has plans for the future. She wants to pass on her knowledge and experience as a trainer to the next generation. Because once morest all odds, she has enjoyed her career. «Skiing is my life. And it will stay that way, »she says. “I want to do my part for the future of Spanish skiing.” (bir)
