Juan Ayuso was crowned winner of the 63rd Tour of the Basque Country on the final day. The Spaniard from the UAE team snatched the yellow jersey from Dane Mattias Skjelmose with second place on the final stage with start and finish in Eibar. Gregor Mühlberger finished the tour in 54th place, which was overshadowed by serious falls from the top favorites. Felix Gall, captain of the Decathlon team, did not make it to the finish line in the sixth stage on Saturday.
Mühlberger (Movistar) stayed in the top group at times on the final section with demanding mountain classifications and crossed the finish line in 29th place, just over four minutes behind. The day’s victory went to Ineos driver Carlos Rodriguez, who improved to second place in the overall standings. Skjelmose crossed the finish line in fourth place, 41 seconds behind Ayuso and finished the tour in third place. For Ayuso, who is only 21 years old, winning the tour is the greatest success in his career so far.
The numerous serious falls during the tour caused a lot of excitement. Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard suffered just as bad a blow as Remco Evenepoel, breaking a collarbone and several ribs as well as bruising his lung. The former world champion broke his collarbone and shoulder blade in his right arm. The interim overall leader Primoz Roglic also had to end the tour following two falls, but was spared serious injuries.
