Spain’s Tomatina festival returns after two years in trucks

Spain’s famous tomato throwing competition was held in Banol, Valencia. Tens of thousands flocked to the streets to participate in the matches that had been suspended in previous years due to the Covid pandemic. By noon the streets of Valencia were full of people. The race, known as La Tomatina, is held every year on the last Wednesday of August. This time too the streets of the city turned red. More than just a competition, the Tomataire is a big celebration in Spain.

It lasts for a week, including dancing, singing and parades. This is also the time when more tourists arrive in Spain. Ticketing has been made mandatory since 2013 to control congestion. Tons of tomatoes arrived in trucks. Those who bought tickets also participated in the race in trucks.

The competition was not held in the last two years due to Covid. This time many people from inside and outside the country participated in the celebrations.
