Spain will not join the US-led coalition to protect ships in the Red Sea

The Iranian-backed Houthis have struck several Red Sea vessels in what they say is support for the Palestinians in the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

On Thursday, the Pentagon said 20 countries had joined a Washington-led coalition seeking to protect the key shipping lane.

The Spanish government has not been unequivocal, and on Sunday a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense told AFP that Spain would not participate.

Although no reason was given, the Spanish press reported on Sunday that the decision not to participate was due to domestic politics.

Pedro Sanchez is currently putting together a coalition and needs the support of the radical left party Sumar, which opposes US foreign policy.

The Houthis welcomed Spain’s position, with Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein al-Ezzi saying “we greatly appreciate Spain’s refusal to engage in American and British lies on the maritime issue.”

Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said Thursday that coalition forces will patrol the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, “responding to and assisting, as needed, commercial vessels navigating this vital international waterway.”
