Madrid – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that his country is ready to recognize the Palestinian state, stressing that the international community cannot help Palestine without recognizing its existence.
Speaking during the opposition questions session for the government in the Spanish Parliament, on Wednesday, Sanchez reiterated that his government would recognize the State of Palestine before the summer of this year, and defended the necessity of doing so.
Sanchez pointed out that “one of the most unfortunate humanitarian disasters of the century” occurred as a result of the war launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip.
He said: “We demand a permanent ceasefire from both sides, the condemnation of the terrorist attacks of the Palestinian faction movement, the immediate release of the hostages and the delivery of humanitarian aid, humanitarian aid commensurate with the humanitarian catastrophe,” as he put it.
The Prime Minister explained that “Israel’s disproportionate response threatens to destabilize the world and the Middle East and destroy decades of human rights.”
He stressed that the international community cannot help Palestine without first recognizing its existence, and said that “Spain is ready to recognize the Palestinian state.”
Sanchez is scheduled to visit Poland, Norway, and Ireland on April 11 and 12, and Slovenia on the 16th of the same month, to seek support for recognizing the Palestinian state and organizing an international peace conference based on the two-state solution.
