Spain Leads Europe in Renewable Energy: Achieving Historic Record in Electricity Production

2024-01-06 09:46:53

Spain produced more than half of its electricity last year from renewable energy sources, including solar and wind. The country thus places itself at the head of the pack of good students in Europe who have set the ecological transition as their objective.

The Spanish electricity network speaks of a historic record. The sun and especially the wind are responsible for more than half of the electricity production for the year 2023. Nearly 135,000 gigawatts/hour were produced with these renewable energies.

This green trend is part of the socialist government’s projects. Spanish leader Pedro Sanchez has pledged to increase the share of renewables in Spanish electricity production to 74% by 2030.

Projects in progress

Mega solar and wind farm projects are currently under construction in sparsely populated areas of the country such as Extremadura or Castile and León.

However, all these projects are not unanimous, particularly among environmentalists who denounce the occupation of agricultural land to install solar farms.

Along with Portugal, Spain is at the head of the countries working for the energy transition.
