Spain is European football champion for the fourth time.

Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal lowered England – in the 87th minute.

– Spain deserved to win, says England captain Gareth Southgate.

England had come back from behind in every knockout match at this European Championship and in the final they were regarding to do it once more.

Cole Palmer, who was replaced in the 70th minute, equalized to 1-1 following only three minutes on the pitch.

But it wasn’t enough.

Because in the 86th minute, another substitute stepped forward and decided the final in Spain’s favor.

“Happy and proud”

Mikel Oyarzabal, who started the game on the bench but came on in the 68th minute, was first to tap in from a pass from Marc Cucurella to make it 2–1.

– Right now I feel enormous joy and pride. My job has been to jump in and help and tonight it was my turn to score, but we took this gold together. We have been like a family and fought as a group throughout the tournament, says Oyarzabal.

Yamal historical

Spain’s first goal was scored by Nico Williams in the 47th minute and the assist came from Lamine Yamal.

Williams turned 22 on Friday and Yamal turned 17 on Saturday.

Both players have been outstanding for Spain in this championship and Yamal makes history as the first Spanish player to make four assists in one and the same championship.

– Yamal is completely incomparable, says Williams.

– This is a dream come true. Now I just want to go home to Spain and celebrate, says Yamal.

This was Spain’s fourth European Championship gold – the most of any nation in history.

– Spain has been the best team throughout the tournament. They deserved to win, says England captain Gareth Southgate.
