Spain’s tourism had a record year in 2023, even exceeding pre-Corona levels. More than 84 million foreign tourists visited the popular holiday destination in Western Europe, Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu announced on Friday. That was 17 percent more than in 2022 and 1 percent more than in 2019, the year before the virus pandemic broke out.

“All in all, 2023 was a very positive year and a record year,” said Hereu. For the current first quarter of 2024, he expects 23.2 million visitors from abroad, eleven percent more than a year ago. International holidaymakers spent 108 billion euros in Spain last year. That was 17 percent more than in 2019. Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world and tourism is an important pillar of the domestic economy.
