Hollywood star Kevin Spacey has emphatically denied under cross-examination that he used his fame to sexually assault multiple men. “I’m sure I might have had sex with a lot of people back then if I wanted to,” the US actor said in court in London on Friday. “But I didn’t.” He is attracted to masculine men and has had sex with men who would describe themselves as straight.

In response to statements that he finds this type of man particularly attractive, the 63-year-old said: “I don’t know if someone is gay or straight when I look at them.” The indictment accuses the Oscar winner (“American Beauty”, “The Usual Suspects”) of sexual assaults, some of them serious, once morest a total of four men in twelve cases. The allegations range from harassment to coercion to have sex. The attacks are said to have happened between 2001 and 2013 in London and the county of Gloucestershire. From 2004 to 2015, Spacey was Artistic Director at the renowned London theater Old Vic. The actor fully denies the allegations. If found guilty, he might face a prison sentence.

Spacey said he “naturally” felt lonely. When asked by the prosecutor if he had sought sexual contact, Spacey answered, to laughter from the audience: “Welcome to life.” He was “very open” when it came to “casual, random sexual encounters”. “That doesn’t make me a bad person,” Spacey said. “I find it extraordinary and beautiful to be intimate with another human being.”

Spacey admitted that in one instance he “definitely misinterpreted signals from a man that he didn’t want sex.” He had “consensual interactions” with two other plaintiffs. In response to allegations that he grabbed a man “like a cobra” in the crotch, Spacey said the allegations were fabricated.
