SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Saturday that the company has made more than 1,000 modifications to the Starship since its first launch failed to reach orbit in April.
Musk said that the company has changed the way the starship is put into orbit,Now the chances of success on the second attempt (launch) are greatly improved。
“So I think the probability of the next flight being successful or reaching orbit is much higher than the last one,” Musk said on Twitter. “Maybe 60 percent; it depends on how well we do the separation between the stages.”
Musk announced that SpaceX has “made a groundbreaking change” to the way Starship separates during launch (that is, the large super-heavy booster breaks away from the Starship spacecraft mid-flight). He noted that SpaceX has decided to conduct thermal staging, where the engines on the Starship spacecraft fire while the Super Heavy booster is still attached.
“This is the technology used by the Soviet Union and Russia in space vehicles,” he added.
Musk also said,Investment in the Starship project could approach $3 billion this year。
Starship is SpaceX’s latest generation of rockets designed to carry cargo — and eventually humans — to deep-space destinations like the moon and Mars.
In April of this year, the SpaceX starship ignited for the first time and exploded at 3 minutes and 59 seconds into the air. After the Starship and its Super Heavy booster failed to separate, the launch team ordered them to be detonated, SpaceX said in a statement.
It’s unclear when Starship will make its second launch. The failed first flight caused havoc at the launch site in Texas and could take months to fix.
The head of NASA said in late April that SpaceX believes the company will need at least two months to repair the launch pad used for Starship’s first test flight and get ready for a second launch by early summer .
Musk was also asked if his commitment to space exploration had faltered after the acquisition of Twitter. “We’re trying to get to Mars as quickly as possible,” he replied.
